Circa 1st-2nd Century A.D.
Gazing serenely forwards with almond-shaped eyes and a full mouth, her hair drawn back from her forehead and wound in coiled braids around the head, a drilled hole in the centre of the head for a hair ornament or wig, the back flat and uncarved, 7¾in (19.7cm) high, mounted

    Literature:
    For portraits with similar hairstyles of the late 1st - early 2nd Century A.D., cf. G. A. Mansuelli, Galleria degli Uffizi. Le Sculture, Rome, 1961, Vol. II, fig. 86. It has been suggested the hole at the front may be for insertion of a hair ornament or wig, perhaps to update the hair arrangement to a more fashionable style.
