Footnotes

  • A group of Hobhouse family association copies. John Cam Hobhouse, Baron Broughton (1786–1869) was befriended by Byron while they were both undergraduates at Trinity College, Cambridge, and accompanied him in his journeys in the Peninsula, Greece and Turkey, publishing Journey through Albania in 1813. He contributed notes to the fourth canto of Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, which was dedicated to him. Prior to this Hobhouse had regarded himself as Byron's poetic equal, having published several of Byron's works alongside his own in the anthology Imitations and Translations in 1809 (ODNB).
