A gold armorial signet ring, second quarter of the 16th century
The oval bezel engraved with the crest and quartered shield of William Burley of Wiltshire, to a plain band
Sold for £7,800 inc. premium

Footnotes

  • The shield and crest depicted on this ring were granted to William Burley of Wiltshire by Thomas Hawley, Clarenceux King of Arms at some point between 1536 and 1553.

The pedigree records that William Burley was entitled to quarter his new shield with the arms of John Bonham, his maternal great, great grandfather who had no direct male descendants. This accounts for the chevron and cross design in the top right-hand quarter of the shield. The three boar heads and demi-boar crest pertain to the Burley family. The bottom left-hand quarter charged with three lances or tilting-spears are from a further Burely coat-of-arms.
