Footnotes

  • Provenance:

Reputedly a gift by King Mongkut of Siam (1804-68) to Napoleon III (1808-1873).

After two centuries of dispute and warfare between Siam and France, trade relations were established in the 1840s, and in 1856 a treaty was signed by King Mongkut of Siam and Napoleon III of France. However, peace was not to last and in the meanwhile the French had attacked Siam's neighbouring countries of Vietnam and Cambodia, eventually signing a new treaty again in 1867.
