Patna, circa 1840-50
consisting of 21 watercolours on watermarked paper, seven larger scenes, 13 depicting various species of birds, and one view of the Taj Mahal; and 18 paintings in gouache on mica, six large scenes, 3 smaller scenes of noblemen in ox-drawn carts, etc., eight depicting individual species of birds, and one large view of several types, some identifying inscriptions in English in pencil on mounts, a handwritten note tipped in next to the view of the Taj Mahal with memorial verses and an appreciation of the building's beauty, an ownership inscription of Clara E. Marten [?] in the front of the album, purple gilt morocco
larger watercolours 185 x 225 mm.; larger mica paintings 175 x 215 mm.; smaller micas 140 x 170 mm.; bird watercolours 245 x 180 mm. and smaller; album 282 x 240 mm.

Footnotes

  • The scenes include: a Muharram procession; ceremonies at a mosque during Muharram; an imam reading the Qur'an to worshippers; nautch girls; the hook-swinging festival (charak puja); a Hindu marriage procession; a nawab in durbar. Many of the scenes, both those in watercolour and on mica, are almost identical to those in an album of sixty paintings on mica, Patna, circa 1830, sold in these rooms, Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 7th October 2010, lot 348.

    Most of the watercolours of birds are on paper watermarked Whatman 1840, and many of the sheets of paper on which the paintings are mounted are marked Whatman 1851.
