Footnotes

  • In Paintings of the Sikhs (London 1966, p. 174), W. G. Archer comments: 'In Sikh mythology and folklore, Dalip [sic] seems to have remained for ever "the child maharaja". However, the especially diminutive stature of the Maharajah in this painting would seem to indicate that it was executed around the time of his childhood or soon afterwards. C. S. Hardinge, Governor-General, published his Recollections of India in 1847: one of the illustrations depicts a very young Duleep Singh of approximately the same age as the figure in the present lot (reproduced in Archer, op. cit, fig. 67).
