Mughal India, Wednesday 25th Sha'ban 1198/14th July 1784, corresponding to the 26th regnal year of Shah 'Alam
Arabic manuscript on cream-coloured paper, 315 leaves, 13 lines to the page written in a good naskhi script in black ink with diacritics and vowel points in black, gold discs with central red dots between verses, inner margins ruled in blue, red and gold, catchwords, extensive Persian commentaries in outer margins written horizontally in nasta'liq script in black ink with words from the Qur'an written in naskhi script in red, illuminated devices in outer margins, sura headings written in thuluth script in white on gold panels, one double-page illuminated frontispiece in colours and gold, tears repaired with adhesive tape, corners rather thumbed otherwise in good condition, seal impression of Muhammad ibn Salim, dated AH 1260/AD 1844-45, on many leaves, later black leather gilt, doublures retaining maroon morocco covers with stamped central medallions and cornerpieces of gilt leather onlay, repaired

Footnotes

  • An interesting feature of this Qur'an is the long section on divination at the end of the manuscript. The interpretation of each letter is given first in Arabic and then in Persian prose followed by Persian verse. Other texts include the best time of day for divination, and symbols for interpretations according to different readers given in rhymed form.
