Footnotes

  • Muhammad Shah appointed Sa'adat Khan Burhan al-Mulk as Governor of Oudh in 1724. The new governor later refused the Emperor's command to transfer to Malwa, preferring to establish himself as Nawab of Oudh, with his capital at Lucknow. He was succeeded in 1739 by his nephew Safdar Jang who ruled until 1754. For further discussion and comparison see T. Falk and M. Archer, Indian Miniatures in the India Office Library, London 1981, pp. 105, 135, and cat. no. 163.
