Footnotes

  • PROVENANCE:
With Dennis Hotz Fine Art, Sandton

Painted circa 1921-1924, soon after the artist's arrival in South Africa, the present lot shows the artist's exploration of a brighter and more varied palette than his Dutch paintings, which he fully explored and adopted in the late 1930s. Although the subject matter is unusual in showing the sea, already we see his fascination with rugged mountain scenery for which the artist is best known.
