Footnotes

  • The Sunbeam was built in 1874 for Thomas, Lord Brassey, as a private yacht. In 1876-77 she famously sailed around the world with Brassey and his family, the first private yacht to make a circumnavigation. Loaned to the Indian Navy as a hospital ship in WW1, she was sold to Devitt & Moore Ocean Training Ships Ltd. in 1920 after Brassey's death, but was never employed as a training ship. In 1922 she was sold on to Sir Walter Runciman & Co. as a private yacht and remained with him until 1930, when she was broken up. Her figurehead is preserved at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.
