• The steam yacht Atalanta was originally named Lorena when she was launched in 1903. Designed by Cox & King of London and built by Ramage & Ferguson at Leith, she was registered at 1,303 tons gross (380 net & 1,398 Thames) and measured 269 feet in length with a 33 foot beam. Driven by 3 Parsons' steam turbines producing 650 nhp., she could cruise at 18 knots and was one of the largest and fastest steam yachts of her era. First owned by A.L. Barber, she was acquired by the immensely wealthy American railway baron George Jay Gould of New York in 1907 and renamed Atalanta. Hired by the British Admiralty as an armed patrol yacht in June 1915 and fitted with 2-3in. guns, she served throughout the remainder of the Great War until released in February 1919 and turned to Mr. Gould who kept her until his death in 1923. Eventually sold to the Chinese government in 1926, she was renamed Kan Lu and put to work for the Chinese Navy's Hydrographic Service where she is said to have survived until 1941.
