Footnotes

  • Within this magnificent and complex design are elements borrowed from the traditional "Willow" pattern found on numerous pieces of English porcelain from the early nineteenth century. The story behind the "Willow" pattern as is known today is a Western amalgamation of various Eastern tales, and in this design Daisy Makeig-Jones has introduced her own twists to the tale, again borrowing aspects of Chinese folk-lore, incorporating one of the four Dragon Kings that ruled over the four seas of the habitable world.

A similar example was offered in these rooms 17th March 2009, 'Ceramic Design from 1860' auction, lot 298.
