The present lot belongs to the well-known Sound-Sculptures series started by Val Bertoia's father, the well-known sculptor and furniture designer Harry Bertoia. This series aims to analyse the total expression of men through metals, and its development has involved research carried out by Harry Bertoia and continued by Val Bertoia in the sound-laboratory in Bertoia's studio. Val Bertoia started to work with his father in 1972; until 1978 he fabricated and assembled Sound-Sculptures under his father supervision. Since his father's death in 1978, Val Bertoia has worked on various different projects, but still continues his involvement in the Sound-Sculptures series.
