    The work has been authenticated by Mr. Piet Boyens on the basis of a photograph. He dates the picture to around 1900.

    Gustave de Smet along with Permeke was one of the foremost Belgian Expressionists. This work dates from his early period when he was probably working in the artists' colony of Laethem-Saint-Martin.
