Footnotes

  • Provenance: Dr. Lionel Fells.

Dr. Fells was sent to Uganda by the colonial office in 1907 and worked among the Buganda from 1911-1918. The figures were reputedly presented to Dr. Fells during this time, by a chief in gratitude for curing one of his wives. Figurative sculpture is not known amongst the Buganda however, and it is suggested that these may have originated in a neighboring tribe, most likely one on the southern shores of Lake Victoria.

    Ex. Christie's South Kensington, 4.12.90, lot 148.
