Footnotes

  • Horace Walpole wrote in 1785: "We went to see the Prince's new palace in Pall Mall and were charmed. It will be the most perfect in Europe. There is an august simplicity that astonished me. You cannot call it magnificent; it is the taste and propriety that strike."

In 1783, the Prince of Wales was given Carlton House for his London residence and he proceeded to refurbish and decorate it to his own taste in collaboration with the architect Henry Holland.

The writing table, based on a bureau à gradin, came to be known as a Carlton House desk and was referred to as such in the records of the Gillows firm in 1796. A rosewood example now in Buckingham Palace was originally at Carlton House.

A nearly identical desk sold at Sotheby's New York, April 24, 2008, lot 132, The Collection of Tom Devenish, Highly Important English Furniture.
