Pictures by Keith Vaughan of still life are extremely rare and very few have ever appeared on the open market. His favoured subjects were the male nude and landscape. Although studies of still life entered his sketchbooks in the 1940s, it was not until the 1950s that Vaughan was able to throw off the shackles of neo-romanticism and approach the subject with a new vision.

An ardent admirer of Cezanne and Matisse, he was further influenced by an exhibition in 1946 of Picasso and Braque. The mark these modern masters left on Vaughan is clearly visible in this lot.

In 2008, two still lifes by Vaughan were offered through these rooms, fetching £174,000 for Vertical Still-Life Group and £90,000 for Still Life. These impressive prices attest to the artist's commercial success for this subject.
