PROVENANCE: With Anthony d'Offay, London, where purchased by Mr & Mrs W K Gibson, 10 June 1977
The present work is very similar in composition to the work titled Les Chapeaux à Brides, cat. no. 337 in Cecily Langdale's Catalogue Raisonée and illustrated in colour, plate 171 and exhibited at The Barbican in 1985, cat.no.120.
Executed in the late 1920s, it belongs to a series of small figure studies in gouache from this period of Gwen's life when she was aware of the work of Marc Chagall. The stylized figures and brighter colours, as seen in this present lot, may have been a result of some exposure to his work. It is believed that the setting of the present work is actually the church at Meudon, where she purchased a run down shack to use as a studio in 1929.
