  • A brief translation: Muhammad Hasan to accompany Thomas Southey and companions to Luxor and Aswan, arrange for them the boat of their choice with furniture, cooking utensils, bedding, food and provisions (except wine and beer), payment to include tips, tolls, donkeys and servants and all other expenses, the journey not to exceed twelve days, and a cook to be provided. The party is to pay Muhammad Hasan the sum of 160 guineas up until Luxor and an extra 25 guineas to the first waterfall at Aswan. The sum of 105 guineas is to be paid in advance.

    Henry Hunter Calvert (1817-82) was from 1838 onwards resident within the Ottoman Empire. He served in the British Consulate at Erzerum in 1851 and was later Vice-Consul in Alexandria, where he remained for 25 years.
