Two large Qur'an leaves
Mamluk, Egypt or Syria, 14th/15th Century

Arabic manuscript on paper, 11 lines to the page written in clear muhaqqaq script in black ink with diacritics and vowel points in black, large gold rosettes decorated with blue and red dots between verses, the bismallah picked out in red, sura heading written in thuluth script in gold, some staining, trimmed with loss of parts of words of text, in mounts, text area 315 x 215 mm.; and another large Qur'an leaf, Mamluk, probably Egypt, 15th Century, 13 lines to the page written in muhaqqaq script in black, now reinked, gold florets between verses, circular and pear-shaped illuminated devices in margins, sura heading in thuluth script in gold, lower part defective, in mount
text area 305 x 170 mm.(3)
