Minor spotting at ends including to frontispiece and first folding map, frontispiece offset to title, minor intermittent spotting internally, repaired corner tear to last 2 leaves of vol 4, few scuffs to bindings, rebacked.
First edition, first state, with X4, 3S4, a4, as cancels in vol 1; G1 & 2L1 in vol 2 canceled; and H3 and L2 in vol 4; and errata uncorrected. The original print run of 500 copies was expanded to 1000 on a hunch, hence the presence of two states. Generally acclaimed as the greatest historical work in the English language.
