Footnotes

  • Provenance: Phillips New Bond Street 'Clarice Cliff, Moorcroft and Sally Tuffin' 11th December 2001, lot 230

This stunning vase is a rare example of Moorcroft's very early use of slip-trailing (tubelining) and it's first implementation in the new 'Florian Ware' range. In early 1898, Moorcroft was appointed Manager of the Macintyre factory's Ornamental Wares, and was provided with his own workshops, decorators and throwers for his exclusive use. The slip-trailing techniques he had been using in the Table Ware "Gesso Faience" range were quickly incorporated to form the Florian range and were to become Moorcroft's unique skill and trademark. This 'Yacht' vase was only recently discovered and acquired by Richard Wright from auction in 2001. No other examples are known to exist. Prior to the recent discover, the vase was only known to have been produced from a period photograph of early Florian Ware pieces. It was from this photograph that the commemorative Moorcroft Centenary vase was produced in 1997. The photograph is reproduced in Paul Atterbury's 'Moorcroft 1897-1993; New Edition', Dennis and Edwards, 2008, pg 10.
