Footnotes

  • In the pantheon of super saloons it's easy to overlook the original Audi S8 - and not just because of its calm, understated lines. Back in 1996, Audi was only just starting to gain ground on its major German rivals, Mercedes and BMW. Their sporting products, created by AMG and M division respectively, were well established and respected.

The S8 wasn't Audi's first S model, but with the Quattro permanent 4wd drivetrain and a potent 360bhp, 4.2-litre V8, it set the tone for future products. The longitudinal front engine was set within an aluminium monocoque chassis that helped keep the limousine's weight down to just 1730kg. It cut through the air well, too with a drag factor of just 0.29Cd.

Audi offered a five-speed automatic option, but this car is one of a few built with the six-speed manual which delivers superior performance. 0-60mph takes under six seconds and top speed is limited to 155mph.

Peter Baumberger always loved the idea of discreet 'Q cars' capable of 'blowing the proverbial doors off' more obvious exotica. He ordered this Audi S8 through his friend Jean Krucker, the renowned Geneva Audi agent, and it was first registered on 9th January 1997. One of Peter's favourite cars for attending business meetings around Europe, it has covered 69,952km and has been maintained to Peter's usual standards. It is finished in the classic Audi colour scheme of silver with black leather and offered in good condition.

A big car, over five metres long, the S8 has plentiful interior space for four adults and a generous 525-litre boot capacity. Standard equipment includes aluminium door mirrors (an S car signature), 14 way adjustable electric front seats and heated rear seats.

The S8s performance was amply demonstrated in the 1998 action-thriller Ronin, directed by John Frankenheimer and starring Robert de Niro alongside Jean Reno. Noted for its sensational car chases (filmed in real time), it featured an S8 as one of the 'hero' cars: at the beginning of the movie, wheelman Larry is asked what kind of car he needs for an upcoming mercenary mission and he replies: "Something very fast. Audi S8, something that can shove a bit."

The Baumberger Collection S8 has fortunately led a more pampered life but is ready for action. It comes with Swiss registration (cancelled) and owners manuals.
