"carved figure from the central supporting post of the ridge pole in the centre of Maori 'runanga' or council house at OPOTIKI, Bay of Plenty, N.Z. where the Rev. Ur(?) Volkner was murdered 1865 - and his eyes eaten in the orgies on his death..."
Framed in Hawaiian koa wood
- On the back of the drawing is a note from Robley:
"Note, Sir George Grey told me in '94 that he (illegible) Maori carvers (illegible). This "Poutokomanawa" was sold in London by Eric Craig of Auckland about 1895", signed Robley.
