Man in a Rocking Chair, oil on canvas, signed in Arabic and dated 1972 upper left,150 x 135cm (59 1/16 x 53 1/8in).
Provenance: Private Egyptian collection.
'In 1968 having won the second prize in painting at the Alexandria Biennale at the age of 25, Ahmed Moustafa was already a well known and established artist when he completed Man in a Rocking Chair in 1972.
'This work is entirely different from his more recent compositions based upon Islamic motifs and the Arabic script for which he has achieved international renown. To anyone familiar with them however, this work cannot but be of the greatest interest for the basic elements of Moustafa's future creative palette are here already displayed.'
Dr Stefan Sperl, head of the Middle Eastern and Near Eastern Department at SOAS, London. August 2010.
