Footnotes

  • Provenance:
Private US collection; acquired from Contemporary Indian and South Asian paitings, Sotheby's, London, 17 June 1999, lot 177. Previous to this the work was acquired directly from the artist in October 1976.

    Published:
Biren De, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Dehli, 1985.

This work was part of the De's Vaishnavite Series that was realised between 1955 and 1956. The painting depicts three Vaishanava (devotees of Vishnu) 'Baul' singers. Their one-string instruments and cymbals and still a common feature in the lives of many inhabitants of villages in Bengal.

De's Vaishnavite phase was preceded, by his Santhal paintings. These works were the result of De's visits to the cave temples at Ajanta and Ellora, during which he made extensive pencil and crayon studies which although were inspired by the caves, were entirely his own compositions.

The dark, earthy colours and strong black outlines around the figures in this work are characteristic elements, only seen in De's work during the mid 1950s.
