Khatna, oil on canvas, signed and dated 1956 lower right, framed,92.8 x 36cm (36 9/16 x 14 3/16in).
Provenance: Private US collection; acquired from Indian and Southeast Asian Art, Sotheby's, New York, 19 September 1996, lot 206. Previously in a private collection in Conneticut, USA.
Khatna is an important older example of the artist's work which contains aesthetic elements also used in one of the artist's seminal works Between the spider and the lamp. The vacant faces and the positioning of the figures on the canvas in relation to one another are comparable to the larger work, so much so that Khatna could be considered as a study for Between the spider and the lamp.
