Provenance: From the collection of Commander Simon Borrett and thence by descent.
The present work belonged to the late Simon Borret who served with the Royal Navy during the Second World War. He trained as a pilot in 1929 and at the outbreak of the war was commanding 811 Naval Squadron aboard HMS Courageous which was sunk by a German U-boat in September 1939. In 1940 he was posted as Commanding officer of 815 Naval Squadron and performed operations with the Eastern Fleet, based in the Indian Ocean in 1944. It is thought that he acquired this work whilst stationed in India in the mid 1940s.
Two works by Tagore, of which this is one, and a book titled Chitra also by the artist were found amongst Commander Borrett's effects.
