[No place: c.1772.]
Folding letterpress table at end. 4to (264 x 205 mm). Stab-sewn, untrimmed. Title-page soiled, small edge tears including, table with a small marginal chip.

EXTREMELY RARE PAMPHLET AND MAP RELATING TO THE NAVIGATION OF THE FLORIDA STRAITS AND THE ORIGIN OF THE GULF STREAM. De Brahm was Surveyor General for the Southern District of North America from 1764 to 1770. His investigations into the Gulf Stream predate Benjamin Franklin's work on the subject. Franklin's compilation chart of data does not appear until 1786. The map is essentially identical to the "Chart of the South End of East Florida, and Martiers" which is one of 3 maps in De Brahm's Atlantic Neptune, 1772, also of extreme rarity. The folding table present here is not called for in Sabin. Cumming British Maps of Colonial American p 52 (English ed); Sabin 7326.
Acquisition: purchased from Martayan Lan, 1994, $5,800.
