vi, [2 blank], 224 pp. 16mo (153 x 100 mm). Original mottled sheep, black leather lettering-piece. Custom chemise and quarter morocco box. Typical browning and foxing, corners clipped from free endpapers, spine gilt rubbed.

FIRST EDITION OF THIS EXTREMELY RARE MIDWESTERN AMERICANUM, IN BEAUTIFUL CONDITION. More than half of the book (pp 9-131) comprises John Bradford's Historical Notes on Kentucky in its first edition in book form. Bradford's Notes first appeared in the Kentucky Gazette and included the exploits of Daniel Boone, Clarke's and Bowman's expeditions, the battle of Blue Licks, and several captivity narratives. Provenance: early ownership inscription of Joseph Voress on front free endpaper; sold by Wessen in 1944 to Frank T. Siebert.
