the rounded bowl finely hand-carved with tall sides and fitted lid with a single "butterfly," pewa, repair on the lid and multiple pewa repairs on the side wall; fine, stained dark brown patina overall.
This lidded wood bowl is of the type uniquely fashioned specifically for the Hale Naua Society (The House of Wisdom), sometime between 1886 and 1891, during the reign of King Kalakaua, who, with over 75 founding members from the elite of Honolulu Hawaiian society, founded the Society to study and resurrect ancient Hawaiian traditions. These bowls were used to house paraphernalia related to the Society (Jenkins, 1989:132).
