Born in Madrid, Esteban Vicente arrived in America in 1936 and became a first-generation member of the New York School. Vicente's gestural work was central to the development of Abstract Expressionism in New York and crucial to the evolution of Abstract Expressionism in California. Throughout his distinguished career he taught on both coasts and was a highly regarded art instructor at the University of California at Berkeley and Los Angeles. Vicente's work is found in museums around the world including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Tate Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Vicente is represented locally by Hackett/Mill Gallery in San Francisco.
