Ex-Richard 'Magic Dick' Salwitz
1982 Ducati 900SS
Frame no. DM860SS091109
Engine no. 92908
Ducati fell on some hard financial times in the 1970s and by 1980, the original 900SS, basically unchanged for eight years was getting long in the tooth. For 1981, the model was updated. New colors and a revised dual seat were used and the six-spoke wheels were painted gold. Frame color was changed to black. There were improvements to the alternator and the valve guides were revised for better sealing.

The lot offered is from the 1981 production and is an everyday rider, not having been restored. It remains absolutely original except for a replacement windscreen. The odometer shows just over 5500 miles. The motorcycle underwent a recent service and we are advised that it runs well. The vendor is the second owner.

A Massachusetts title shows the first owner to have been Richard D. Salwitz. Salwitz is better knows as the master harmonica player, Magic Dick, of the J. Geils Blues Band, one of the leading groups of the 1970s. Salwitz bought the bike the same year the band dissolved. One can imagine an autumn day in New England with the fall colors ablaze and Magic Dick astride this Ducati, carving his way across some country roads. He might have been thinking about his next gig, where he would certainly play his signature number, "Whammer Jammer", an interpretation that would inspire a new generation of harmonica players.
