During March and April of 1954 Cocteau spent time at the 7th Cannes Film Festival where he was president of the jury. He then travelled to Madrid and Seville but on his return to Milly-la-Forêt in June he suffered a minor heart attack and spent the next few months convalescing at the Villa Santo Sospir in Saint-Jean Cap-Ferrat. Whilst recovering, Cocteau used his time to paint, proof read his poetic work Clair-Obscur (which would be published in November) and to experiment with the use of pastels.
