Pensive self portrait signed with initials and dated 'JC 1931' (lower right), pencil and crayon 31.5 x 24cm (12 3/8 x 9 7/16in).
This self portrait dates from 1931. After publishing an article on 'Les Tragédiens' by Desbordes in May of that year, Cocteau spent the summer in Toulon with Bérard and Desbordes. He later contracted typhoid and spent forty days in a clinic followed by a period of re-couperation. He returned to Paris in November of that year.
