At the end of 1915 Cocteau had met Picasso, and the two struck up a strong friendship, with Picasso painting Cocteau the following May. Having volunteered for the Army Ambulance Section at the outbreak of war, by 1916 Cocteau had postings in Ysar, Nieuport and Amiens. It was a year of contrasts for Cocteau, as on his return to Paris in July, he joined the Foreign Ministry's Department of Propaganda, allowing him to immerse himself in the literary and artistic world of Montparnasse, where he was working on Parade, for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. Later in the year he exhibited poems in the Lyre et Palette exhibition in Montparnasse, alongside paintings by Picasso, Matisse and Modigliani.
