Footnotes

  • Les MariĆ©s de la Tour Eiffel, was a one act ballet written by Cocteau and Georges Auric. It served as a showpiece for the musical ideas of Le Six, the group of avant-garde composers that Cocteau brought together as a reaction against the impressionist musical movement. Cocteau described the somewhat surreal plot of the ballet (a wedding breakfast set on the first platform of the Eiffel Tower, where one of the guests is eaten by a lion and a telegraph office appears from nowhere) as "Sunday vacuity; human beastliness, ready-made expressions, disassociation of ideas from flesh and bone, ferocity of childhood, the miraculous poetry of everyday life".
