Footnotes

  • The original prototype of this composition by Joos van Cleve is in a private European collection as noted in John Oliver Hand's monograph on the artist (Joos van Cleve - The Complete Paintings, Fig. 14, p. 15, no. 6). Many copies exist from the workshop of Joos van Cleve, this image however, reflects strongly the influence of the contemporary Flemish painter Pieter Cock van Aelst (Flemish, 1502-1550).
