These two paintings are based on the views by Bernard Bellotto in the collection of the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden. In this now classic view of the city, Dresden from the right bank of the Elbe below the Augustus Bridge, the artist appears to have based his work on Bellotto's composition of 1747 with slight changes in the staffage and without the scaffolding on the tower of the Catholic Hofkirche. In the pendant view, Dresden from the right bank of the Elbe above the Augustus Bridge the artist has followed Bellotto more closely, even showing the artist sketching in the foreground, however, he has chosen to give the sky the rosy glow of sunset.
