Footnotes

  • Provenance:
Wallace Stewart Ross, Dental Surgeon to Sir Winston Churchill and thence by descent.

Winston Churchill had problems with his teeth from childhood and struggled with a speech impediment (in his words) from an early age. These partial dentures were designed by his dentist, Wilfred Fish and specially made by Fish's technician Derek Cudlipp. Unlike a normal denture, which is intended to cleave to the palate by suction, this denture was designed to fit loosely, to compensate for his distinctive lisp when public speaking. The thin retaining clasps were vunerable and Churchill had several sets made so that repairs could be undertaken without inconvenience. This set is understood to have been fitted at Fish's practice at Sevenoaks before WW2 and was worn until some months before Churchill's death when it was returned for repair. Another similar set, donated by Derek Cudlipp, is on display at the Royal College of Surgeons.

Wallace Stewart Ross had become Fish's Partner in 1932 and worked together with him at their practices in Sevenoaks and Cavendish Square until Fish's retirement, when he became Churchill's dental practitioner.
