A shakudo tsuba
Yokoya School, 19th century
Of oval form, partly pierced, carved and inlaid with a shishi beneath a waterfall, the reverse with a spreading pine tree beside a stream, details in gold and shakudo takazogan, signed Sesshu no zu, Soyo with kao.
7.3cm (2 7/8in).

    Provenance: W.W.Winkworth collection.
    John Harding collection, purchased at Glendining & Co., London, 1962.

    The inscription states that the design is after that of Oda Sesshu (1420-1506) who worked in Kyoto, mainly as a painter of landscapes.

    The tsuba is accompanied by a certificate by Dr Kazutaro Torigoe, dated 1965, stating that it is the genuine work of Soyo and opining that there are differences between the design and that of Sesshu's.
