Shallow circular with a piecrust edge, the dark brown ground trailed in lighter brown and cream coloured slip with stripes, dots and zig-zags including the initials H : P and date 1778, 34.5cm diam (broken across and restored)

  • Related decoration of trailed lines at the margin to frame a square panel occur on dishes with piecrust rims attributed to North Staffordshire, see Ronald Cooper, Slipware Dishes (1968), figs 309-310. Compare also fig. 327, a dish excavated in Spalding, Lincs. It is rare to find such a prominent and early date on piecrust dishes of this type.
