Lot Details
A problem scotia-footed mug, probably Liverpool, circa 1760-65
Of bell shape on a turned foot, with a neat grooved strap handle, the underfired body of curious creamy tone painted in blackish-blue with a spreading peony spray, a diaper border beneath the rim, 12.8cm high (chipped and cracked)

Footnotes

  • Mugs with Scotia feet are strongly associated with William Reid & Co. but usually with a very different handle form. Two examples with strap handles are illustrated by Bernard Watney, Liverpool Porcelain (1997), figs. 56 and 57. These may be early productions of James Pennington. The paste of this mug may be phosphatic but is very much underfired, resulting in a creamware-like appearance which is difficult to ascribe to a maker. Curiously, the style of painting in a very dark blue is not dissimilar to some West-Country porcelain from Plymouth.
