In the mid-1960s, Ferrari needed a 2-litre production-based engine for the new Formula 2, conceiving the mid-engined Dino to provide the necessary basis. Faced with the daunting task of building 500 units per annum to meet homologation requirements, Ferrari turned to FIAT for assistance, the resulting agreement for the latter to build the Dino's four-cam V6 engine leading to a spin-off model for FIAT. Launched in Pininfarina-bodied Spyder form at the 1966 Turin Show, the FIAT Dino carried its 2-litre, 160bhp engine ahead of the driver in conventional manner.
To any young gentlemen growing up in the late 1960s Fiat's new Dino represented something truly inspirational - its looks were undeniably good, yet strikingly modern and the heritage and name behind the project provided added magic.
The car was acquired by a prominent collection from a Rhode Island collector approximately 10 years ago. Since then the Dino has been treated to some refurbishment work and today presents well in a fiery Italian red, with the interior re-trimmed in biscuit hide. Not just a pretty face, these beautiful Pininfarina creations also qualify for a number of historical race and rally events in fact, an example ran at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1968 under the Abarth banner.
