Lot Details
1983 Moto Guzzi 844cc Le Mans III
Chassis no. ZGUVFAVF4DM100203
Engine no. VFO 19500
Moto Guzzi's sporting history dates to 1921, shortly after the firm's founding. They were successful almost immediately. During the 1930s and after World War II, Guzzi often beat the usually dominant Brits, including eleven wins at their signature race, the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy. Guzzis went on to take 14 titles in the 1940s and 1950s in the Motorcycle World Championship.

In 1967 Moto Guzzi introduced the V-7, a 700cc air-cooled V-twin with a longitudinal crankshaft and shaft drive. In keeping with the firm's sporting tradition, racing versions of the new bike were developed. In 1971, an 850cc version finished third at the Bol d'Or 24-hour endurance race at the famed Le Mans circuit. This led to a namesake sports roadster, the 850 Le Mans. The model progressed through a Le Mans II version, and the Le Mans III was introduced in Italy in 1981 and arrived in the U.S. in 1983. It had an updated engine named the "square head" after the angular cylinders and heads of the power plant. Not only did the magazines rave about the Le Mans III, but a racing version won the U.S. Endurance Racing Championship in 1984.

The offered bike sports an older restoration and shows little sign of age. It has the rarely-seen white with a black saddle color scheme. When new, these bikes carried a premium price tag of over $4500, so their value is enhanced today by their rarity. The Le Mans III is the last of this series of Guzzis and has over 40 improvements over the Le Mans II. As such it represents the end of one of Guzzi's greatest sporting designs. Offered on a Certificate of Title.
