Footnotes

  • Wang Qingzheng in his A Dictionary of Chinese Ceramics (2002, Singapore; English edition translated by Jay Xu and Lillian Chin) describes shallow and flat porcelain vessels of irregular shape such as the present lot as "used for adjusting the brush strokes before painting and writing."

Traditionally Chinese artisans have made rich use of the homophonic similarity between the word for 'bat' (fu) and the word for 'blessing' (fu). The present lot could be 'read' as any number of well known rebuses involving puns on the word for 'clouds' (yun or 'luck') 'red' (hong or 'vast') or 'upside-down' (dao or 'has arrived.'). For an exhaustive survey of the various permutations of this wordplay see Terese Tse Bartholomew, Hidden Meanings in Chinese Art (2006, The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco).
