Roman types. 60 lines of commentary surrounding text. 2 engraved illustrations by Baccio Baldini after Botticelli illustrating Inferno cantos 1 and 2. Folio (400 x 260 mm). Full black morocco by Lortic, covers blindstamped and gilt in Italianate style with wide border enclosing panel of lions rampant devices, gilt dentelles, a.e.g. A handful of pencil and light ink underlinings, a little strengthening to margins of title and corner of next few leaves, first illustration shaved within neatline, printed portion of b1 very unobtrusively inlaid, 2 leaves near end rehinged, one paper flaw strengthened, 2 leaves with minute sliver of paper tape covering three or four letters, binding extremities rubbed.
The first illustrated Dante, and the second illustrated book printed in Florence. Additionally the first Florentine edition of the Divine Comedy, and the first appearance in print of Landino's commentary, which would be oft reprinted before the end of the 16th century.
The printer, a German from Breslau, had intended to illustrate every cantoblank space is left on the page with this in mindbut only 19 of the 100 engravings were produced. They are attributed to Baccio Baldini after designs by Sandro Botticelli. Most copies are found with only the first two engravings (some copies have a duplicate of the second), and in these copies the engravings are printed directly onto the page. About 20 copies exist with the other 17 illustrations, printed on separate sheets and pasted in. An extremely attractive copy. BMC VI, 628; Goff D-29; HC *5946.
