Lot Details
A large collection of sepia and black and white historic photographs of the Hollywood Bowl, 1920s-1960s
Approximately 100; all vintage prints with either a matte or glossy finish; depicting the whole history of the Bowl, starting in the early 1900s when people would congregate in the open space (though nothing had been built yet) up until the 1960s. It's fascinating to see the land surrounding the Bowl as it was over a hundred years ago and to see the progression of how it was constructed. There are also many shots of events that took place there such as the first Easter Sunday service in 1921 (where people are just sitting on the hillside) and a Woodrow Wilson memorial service in 1924. Many of the photographs seem to have been taken by a surveyor for official documentation purposes. Also included are a number of images of classical musicians who performed at the Bowl in the 1930s-1940s, some of which are signed. Overall, this collection offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of a beloved Los Angeles landmark. Please know our catalogue illustration does not do justice to this lot.
