Demantoid Rough and Cut
Ural Mountains, Russia
This rare and sought-after member of the garnet species has two primary chromphores: chromium causes the intense green color and ferric iron is the cause of yellow in the stone. Russian demantoids are famous for their beautiful and diagnostic horsetail inclusions. The present offering includes a rough, dodecahedral crystal, weighing 2.76 carats and measuring 7.0 x 6.5mm; and a faceted demantoid garnet from the locality which is a textbook example exhibiting all the most sought-after qualities in the gemstone of vibrant color and high dispersion, weighing 0.96 carats and measuring 6.0 x 3.8mm. • Accompanied by a copy of a magazine in which there is an article about world localities of demantoid: In Color: All About Colored Gemstones, Summer 2009, Issue 11, pages 16-20.
