A scarce coin that both the Akers and Winter references agree is the "most often available" of the Carson City half eagles struck in the 1870-1874 date range. Although this example has seen obvious use in circulation, the surfaces are quite smooth for a Carson City issue. For future identification, there is a single scratch from the eagle's beak down to the upper left corner of the shield, and a couple of small marks at the base of the reverse. One of only 20,770 pieces struck, most of which saw extensive use in commercial channels. (PCGS 8323) Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated
